The Transportation Engineer designs, analyzes, and optimizes transportation systems, including roads, highways, railways, and public transit networks. The role ensures safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility solutions while complying with national and international engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Transportation Planning & Design
Develop roadway geometric designs (horizontal/vertical alignments, intersections).
Conduct traffic impact studies for new developments.
Design pedestrian/cyclist infrastructure per Complete Streets principles.
2. Traffic Engineering
Perform capacity analysis using HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) methodologies.
Optimize traffic signal timing (Synchro/SimTraffic).
Model traffic flow with VISSIM/PTV Visum .
3. Public Transit & Multimodal Systems
Plan BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) and rail networks .
Integrate NMT (Non-Motorized Transport) facilities.
Evaluate parking demand and parking management solutions .
4. Safety & Compliance
Implement road safety audits (RSAs) per SANRAL standards .
Design roadside safety hardware (barriers, signage).
Ensure compliance with SANS 1200 (Construction Standards) and TMH (Technical Methods for Highways) .
5. Project Management
Prepare tender documents and BOQs (Bills of Quantities) .
Supervise construction oversight for transportation projects.
Liaise with municipalities, SANRAL, and PRASA .
Required Qualifications
BEng/BSc in Civil Engineering (Transportation Focus) .

Certifications:
SANRAL M5/M10 (Roads) .
PMP/PRINCE2 (Project Management) .
Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
Software Proficiency:
CAD: AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads.
Traffic Modeling: VISSIM, AIMSUN, SIDRA.
GIS: ArcGIS, QGIS (for spatial analysis).
Regulatory Knowledge:
RTMS (Road Transport Management System) .
NATMAP (National Transport Master Plan) .
Soft Skills
Stakeholder engagement (public consultations, inter-departmental coordination).
Data-driven decision-making (traffic count analysis).
Report writing for feasibility studies and funding proposals.
Experience Requirements
5+ years in transportation engineering , including:
Road/highway design (SANRAL projects).
Traffic impact assessments (TIAs) for large developments.
Exposure To:
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) .
Green transport initiatives (e.g., electric vehicle infrastructure).
