The Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of safe, durable, and cost-effective structures (buildings, bridges, industrial plants, and mining infrastructure). The role ensures structural integrity, compliance with local and international codes, and innovative solutions for complex engineering challenges.
Key Responsibilities
1. Structural Design & Analysis
Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) for buildings, bridges, and industrial structures.
Design reinforced concrete, steel, timber, and masonry structures using Eurocodes, SANS 10100, and ACI/ASCE standards .
Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) using ETABS, SAP2000, or STAAD.Pro for complex geometries.
2. Construction Support & Supervision
Review shop drawings, material specifications, and method statements for compliance.
Conduct site inspections to ensure adherence to design intent and safety standards.
Resolve construction-related structural issues (e.g., cracking, deflection, foundation settlement).
3. Risk Assessment & Safety Compliance
Perform structural stability assessments for temporary works (scaffolding, formwork, shoring).
Ensure compliance with OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and SANS 10400 .
Investigate structural failures and recommend remedial actions.
4. Project Coordination
Collaborate with architects, contractors, and geotechnical engineers for integrated design solutions.
Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and cost estimates for clients.
Manage structural aspects of BIM (Revit, Tekla Structures) for clash detection.
5. Innovation & Sustainability
Design low-carbon structures using sustainable materials (e.g., recycled steel, green concrete).
Implement seismic retrofitting for existing buildings in high-risk zones.
Explore modular and prefabricated construction techniques.
