Key Responsibilities
1. Ground Control Management
  • Design support systems (rockbolts, shotcrete, mesh) for stopes/tunnels.
  • Conduct stability analyses using empirical (Q-system, RMR) and numerical modeling (FLAC3D, Phase2).
  • Implement seismic monitoring protocols (ISS, IMS).
2. Hazard Identification & Mitigation
  • Perform weekly hangingwall inspections per MHSA Regulation 8.6.
  • Lead fall-of-ground (FOG) investigations using ICAM methodology.
  • Develop early-warning systems for rockburst-prone areas.
3. Operational Support
  • Optimize stope dimensions & pillar designs for maximum ore recovery.
  • Advise on mining sequence to reduce stress concentrations.
  • Approve temporary support exemptions for development ends.
4. Regulatory Compliance
  • Maintain MHSA-compliant rock engineering plans.
  • Submit DMRE-required reports (Seismic Hazard Reports, Annual Ground Control Review).
  • Ensure adherence to SANS 10208 (Rockbolt Standards).
5. Training & Culture
  • Train miners in scaling procedures & ground awareness.
  • Conduct monthly ground control safety campaigns.
  • Mentor Graduate Rock Engineers.

Required Qualifications
  • BEng/BSc in Mining/Geological Engineering or Geology.
  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • Rock Mechanics Certificate
    • DMRE Certificate of Competency (MRE).
  • Advantageous:
    • SACNASP registration (for geotechnical reporting).
    • ISO 31000 Risk Management Certification.

Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Software Proficiency:
    • RS2/RocScience Suite (stress modeling).
    • Maptek Vulcan (stope stability analysis).
  • Field Techniques:
    • Core logging (GSI, fracture mapping).
    • In-situ stress measurements (CSIRO cells).
Behavioral Skills
  • Crisis management during seismic events.
  • Persuasive communication to enforce safety protocols.
  • Data-driven decision making (seismic interpretation).

Experience Requirements
  • 5+ years in hard-rock mining (gold/platinum/chromium).
  • Proven Experience With:
    • Deep-level mines (>2km depth).
    • Mechanized bord-and-pillar operations.
  • Exposure To:
    • Backfill systems (paste, hydraulic).
    • Raiseboring stability assessments.
