Project Engineer

Job Purpose
The Project Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing engineering projects in the energy and petrochemical sector, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to required quality and safety standards. The role involves multidisciplinary coordination between process, mechanical, electrical, and civil teams for both greenfield and brownfield projects.

Key Responsibilities
1. Project Planning & Execution
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets for capital projects (CAPEX) ranging from R10M-R500M+
  • Coordinate FEED (Front End Engineering Design) and detailed engineering phases
  • Manage EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management) contractors
2. Technical Coordination
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables (P&IDs, isometrics, equipment specs)
  • Conduct technical bid evaluations for major equipment (reactors, compressors, turbines)
  • Oversee construction, commissioning, and handover processes
3. Stakeholder Management
  • Interface between operations, engineering, and contractors
  • Present progress reports to senior management and clients
  • Manage change control processes and variation orders
4. Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with SAQCC Gas, OHS Act, and Petrochemical Industry standards
  • Conduct HAZID/HAZOP studies and implement risk mitigation plans
  • Enforce Permit-to-Work systems for high-risk activities

Required Qualifications
  • BEng/BSc in Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical Engineering
  • PrEng registration with ECSA (mandatory for senior roles)
  • Project Management Certification (PMP/PRINCE2)
  • GCC Factories (advantageous for plant modifications)

Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Project Controls: Primavera P6/MS Project, cost forecasting
  • Engineering Software: AutoCAD, Navisworks, PDMS
  • Process Knowledge: Refinery/Petrochem unit operations (distillation, reforming)
  • Construction Methods: Modularization, loop testing, mechanical completion
Management Skills
  • Contract administration (NEC/FIDIC)
  • Claims management and dispute resolution
  • Resource leveling and critical path analysis

Experience Requirements
  • 5-10 years in energy sector projects
  • Minimum 2 full project lifecycles (FEED to commissioning)
  • Experience with:
    • Sasol/SAPREF/ENGEN operations
    • Gas processing or renewable energy projects
    • International codes (API, ASME, ANSI)
