Mine Manager

The Mine Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of a mining site, ensuring production targets are met while complying with all legal, environmental, and safety regulations. The role involves strategic planning, resource management, and leadership of large multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Management
  • Oversee daily mining operations (open-pit or underground).
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term mine plans (5-year horizon).
  • Optimize production schedules to meet tonnage and grade targets.
2. Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act) and DMRE regulations.
  • Conduct safety audits and risk assessments (HIRA).
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 (OHS) and ISO 14001 (Environmental).
3. Financial & Cost Control
  • Manage OPEX and CAPEX budgets (R100M+).
  • Implement cost-reduction strategies (fuel, explosives, labor optimization).
  • Review monthly financial reports with senior management.
4. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with DMRE, unions, and local communities.
  • Address ESG commitments (water use, rehabilitation, social development).
  • Report to board members and investors on mine performance.
5. Team Leadership
  • Lead mining engineers, geologists, and shift supervisors.
  • Foster a zero-harm safety culture.
  • Oversee skills development (artisan training, leadership programs).

Required Qualifications
  • BEng/BSc in Mining Engineering or Geology.
  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) – DMRE-approved.
    • ECSA PrEng registration (advantageous).
  • Additional Certifications:
    • SAMTRAC/NEBOSH (Safety Management).
    • Project Management (PMP/PRINCE2).

Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Mine Planning Software:
    • MineRP, Surpac, Datamine.
  • Production Optimization:
    • Ore reserve estimation, dilution control.
  • Regulatory Knowledge:
    • MPRDA, NEMA, Mine Health and Safety Act.
Leadership Skills
  • Decision-making under pressure (e.g., seismic events, strikes).
  • Conflict resolution with unions and contractors.
  • Strategic thinking for long-term mine viability.

Experience Requirements
  • 10+ years in mining, including:
    • 5 years in a senior supervisory role (e.g., Section Manager).
    • Underground/Open-pit experience (coal, gold, PGM).
  • Proven Track Record:
    • Managed shafts or large-scale open pits.
    • Delivered production targets safely and profitably.
