Environmental Engineer

Job Purpose
The Environmental Engineer ensures compliance with environmental regulations while developing sustainable solutions for energy and petrochemical operations. The role focuses on minimizing ecological impact through waste management, emissions control, and environmental monitoring, while supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems.

Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Compliance & Permitting
  • Ensure adherence to NEMA, NWA, and AQA regulations in South Africa.
  • Prepare and submit Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)Waste Management Licenses (WML), and Atmospheric Emission Licenses (AEL).
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
2. Pollution Control & Waste Management
  • Design and optimize effluent treatment systems for refineries/petrochemical plants.
  • Implement carbon capture, flare gas recovery, and VOC reduction initiatives.
  • Oversee hazardous waste disposal in line with SANS 10234.
3. Monitoring & Reporting
  • Conduct air/water/soil quality sampling and interpret lab results.
  • Prepare annual environmental performance reports for NERSA/DWS.
  • Track GHG emissions using IPCC methodologies for carbon tax reporting.
4. Sustainability & ESG Initiatives
  • Develop decarbonization roadmaps aligned with company net-zero targets.
  • Support green hydrogen, biofuels, and circular economy projects.
  • Conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) for new projects.
5. Incident Response
  • Lead spill containment and remediation efforts.
  • Investigate environmental incidents using root cause analysis (RCA).

Required Qualifications
  • BEng/BSc in Environmental/Chemical/Civil Engineering.
  • PrEng/PrSciNat registration with ECSA/SACNASP (advantageous).
  • Certifications:
    • NEBOSH Environmental Diploma.
    • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
    • GHG Accounting Certification (e.g., GHG Protocol).

Essential Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Regulatory Knowledge: NEMA, NWA, AQA, and international standards (EPA, IFC).
  • Modeling Tools: AERMOD (air dispersion), WATERGEMS (hydrology), SimaPro (LCA).
  • Field Techniques: Stack emission testing, groundwater monitoring, biodiversity surveys.
Management Skills
  • Stakeholder engagement with DFFE, municipalities, and communities.
  • ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, TCFD, CDP).
  • Budgeting for remediation projects.

Experience Requirements
  • 3-5 years in oil & gas, mining, or heavy industry.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Sasol/Engen/PetroSA operations.
    • EIA processes for energy projects.
    • Environmental auditing.
